VIDEO: Intentional Peer Support

Since it was first introduced at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in 2018, more than 80 incarcerated individuals have trained as Intentional Peer Support (IPS) specialists at six NDCS facilities.

In honor of #SecondChanceMonth we’re shining a light on this program, which encourages individuals with similar life experiences to walk alongside each other in supportive relationships. Forging new beginnings starts with supportive relationships and IPS is an invaluable tool for many of our returning community members. #BuildYourFuture

Second Chance Month

April is Second Chance Month and we’re kicking it off with a shout out to our Reentry team, a dedicated group who fosters meaningful second chances for our returning community members. Alongside the NDCS Social Work team, this group recently hosted the fourth annual Collaboration Fair in Lincoln, held at the Center for People in Need.

ServSafe Class at WEC

Congrats to these men at the Work Ethic Camp for adding a new qualification to their resumes. This month, they participated in a ServSafe Food Handler program through the Nebraska Extension. Designed for food service workers, the course enhances skills related to food safety, personal hygiene, cross-contamination, allergens, time, temperature, cleaning and sanitation.

Teammates Graduate CICR Instructor School

What better way to learn than by teaching? These NDCS team members completed training to be Crisis Intervention and Conflict Resolution (CICR) instructors and are now fully equipped to teach these valuable skills to other teammates.

While the training course often called for participants to go beyond their comfort zones, what they accomplished was remarkable! All 17 new instructor candidates are now part of the CICR team.

Meet Reentry Specialist Todd Rosenthal! He currently works with the population at the Reception and Treatment Center (RTC). With nearly 30 years of experience in corrections and parole, Rosenthal is committed to the work of helping individuals have a successful transition to the community.

Second Chance Pups

A new future awaits these dogs, and their trainers can be proud of the part they played in it. This month, six dogs graduated from Second Chance Pups. The program carefully matches canines from local shelters and rescues with individuals at the Nebraska State Penitentiary who train them in basic obedience, while providing human socialization and interaction with other dogs.

Through the process, these men learn valuable skills and provide a service that is truly life-changing for the dogs and the families who will adopt them. It’s a win-win-win for all involved!

A reminder that applications for the next VLS grant cycle are due April 10! Our VLS partners play an invaluable role in successful reentry for many men and women in Nebraska. In fact, more than 9,400 individuals have received reentry support through the VLS program since 2015.
