Mission: Keep people safe 

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) has a responsibility to keep people safe. This includes the public and the people who live in, work at and visit its prisons. 

NDCS employs more than 2,300 team members operating nine facilities statewide, which house approximately 5,800 incarcerated individuals. The department's focus includes programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, reentry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). 

The work of NDCS is identified by four separate, but overlapping, categories: People, Programs, Policies and Physical Plant. Through developing our people, following sound correctional policies, and investing in our physical plants, we provide program opportunities for our population to change thinking and behavior and develop the tools and skills to successfully reenter their communities.

Through the use of effective interventions and incentives we make prisons safe. 

By creating safe environments where people can engage in strengths-based programming, achieve educational goals and develop valuable work skills, their lives are transformed  

When people re-enter their communities with these skills and resources, they become contributing members of society and our communities are safe.
