NDCS Team Member Spotlight: John Kowalski

Thanks to the hard work of Facilities Maintenance Leader (FML) John Kowalski, Community Corrections Center Omaha (CCCO) remains in good repair, regardless of the season.

Kowalski has been with NDCS for more than 10 years, starting as a Corporal at the Youth Regional Center. He has been taking care of the building and grounds of CCCO since 2016.

Kowalski’s supervisor, Assistant Warden David Erickson, commended Kowalski for his hard work and reliability.

The Association of State Correctional Administrators (ASCA) is currently accepting scholarship applications from children of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services employees now through March 31, 2019. Scholarship amounts offered are $1,500 for undergraduate students, $1,500 for graduate students, and $750 for individuals who in a prior year had received either a $1,000 or $1,500 scholarship.

Visiting sessions for Diagnostics and Evaluations (DEC) inmates will take place at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) visiting room beginning March 6, 2019. Incarcerated individuals will still be allowed one visit per week. Available visiting sessions will be according to incarcerated individuals' housing unit.

Visitors for incarcerated individuals assigned to DEC hospital will be processed at LCC and then go to DEC for the visit.

Thanks to the Community Justice Center (CJC) for offering its 7th series of three 90-minute “Emotional Hygiene/Anger” sessions. Thirty-four men at NDCS Diagnostic and Evaluation Center in Lincoln successfully completed the course. The course aims to explore the root of emotions, accountability, responsibility, and management of those areas.

Of the 34 participants, 94 percent rated the sessions as excellent, and 59 percent cited having gained insight into their emotional hygiene and the three sources of anger.

Gaining hands-on experience to develop new skill sets to use after serving time in Nebraska’s correctional facilities, incarcerated individuals at the Community Corrections Center of Lincoln begin their journey to an Electrical Apprenticeship this fall and to new career opportunities upon release.

The Community Corrections Center of Lincoln launched the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCR) Core curriculum’s 12-week program. This program educates incarcerated individuals on a variety of construction-focused topics.
