The extra challenges brought on by the recent COVID-19 pandemic have brought to light the numerous teammates who were willing to go the extra mile at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). One of those was Chemical Dependency Treatment Specialist Abbey Podrazo, who recently earned the annual OCC Programs Award for her daily efforts to motivate her clients and teammates to always do their best.

“She exemplifies integrity, respect, compassion, growth and excellence on a daily basis,” said teammate Karin Humenick-Cullen who nominated her. “She is the definition of a motivated team-player that leads by example.”

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) selected Case Manager Mark Johnson as the Operations Division 2019 Employee of the Year in recognition of his high standard of work performance and a “can do” attitude. Johnson knows what is expected of him at work and displays exceptional competence and sound judgement in the execution of his responsibilities every day. The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) sported some appropriately dressed “firecrackers” for the 4th of July. These infants, and their mothers, are part of the nursery program at NCCW. The program affords women who qualify, the opportunity to stay with their infants during incarceration and take part in classes and workshops that focus on parenting skills, prenatal care, child development and more.

Men working in the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) TEK Industries have been producing cutting dies used to make face masks. Currently, they make five different kinds of cutting dies for various sizes and types of masks. Once the dies are completed, they are sent to Accuquilt in Omaha, who in turn is donating profits to Share our Strength/No Kid Hungry. At the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS), everyone does their part to continue its operations to keep people safe. As COVID-19 has forced teammates and the incarcerated population alike to change the way they go through their days, teammates in medical services are going above and beyond as they educate teammates and incarcerated population. Cornhusker State Industries (CSI) employs incarcerated individuals at five NDCS facilities to help prepare them for successful reentry back into the community. Recently, 27 men have been working at the CSI shop at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) making much needed masks.
