The 2019 Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) Warden’s Proficiency Award for the Administrative Services Division was awarded to Michelle Decker, secretary for the deputy warden. Decker pushed many positive changes to increase cognitive, behavioral intervention programming. She assisted by assigning instructors, interviewing participants, creating class rosters and obtaining supplies. Teammates at NSP know they can rely on Decker to help other areas of the facilities when needed. As an invaluable SERVES member, she regularly steps up to care for her fellow teammates as well.

Congratulations to Corporal Colt Heiden on receiving the 2019 Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) Warden’s Proficiency Award for the operations division. For the past two years, Heiden has been assigned to a specialty position at NSP and has taken on some of the most challenging work in the agency. He’s quickly learned the varied aspects of the position while demonstrating the ability to coach and train new team members. Women at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) recently completed a restorative justice intervention course thanks to the Community Justice Center (CJC). Participants learned about victim impact and worked on taking responsibility for their actions.

“I appreciate it opening my eyes to seeing the damage I have done,” said one participant.

Scott R. Frakes, director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) has been elected treasurer of the Correctional Leaders Association (CLA). That organization consists of the chief executive officers (CEOs) from state correctional systems across the United States committed to promoting professionalism in the field of corrections and supporting policy and practices relative to public safety.
