Morton earns OCC Security Award

Knowing the importance of listening to your staff’s needs and making sure they have the best tools to do their jobs effectively are some of the qualities exemplified by Lieutenant Ron Morton that earned him the Omaha Corrections Center (OCC) Security Award.

This type of leadership is crucial, especially on third shift. “Lt. Morton ensures his staff is trained and are always prepared for promotions and the tasks at hand,” said Captain Seth Perlman. “Lt. Morton is a very tenured and experienced lieutenant and deserves this recognition.”

Harms awarded NSP Proficiency and Performance Award

Modeling professionalism and keeping a positive attitude are some of the qualities that merited Corporal Dana Harms the 2019 Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) Warden’s Proficiency and Performance Award for the Administration Division. When Harms came to NSP as an eye clinic technician in medical, she improved the work environment of her teammates and enhanced the atmosphere of the facility. Her willingness to help others while maintaining a positive attitude increased the morale of the entire facility. Talent flourishes at WEC

Inside the Work Ethic Camp (WEC), a group of men are taking extra steps to encourage change and forward movement for themselves and their peers. Thanks to the artistic talents of Michael Dugan, WEC has been getting an inspirational facelift. He has taken a hands-on approach to also teach airbrushing and mural painting to other men at WEC.

This group of men have not only created murals that will serve as a legacy within WEC, but a project depicting Nebraska points of interest is also on display at the Medicine Creek State Reservoir in Cambridge, NE.

The Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) selected Administrative Assistant Lisa Bruckner for Employee of the Quarter. Bruckner was nominated by her teammates for being a self-motivated employee who is always willing to go the extra mile for the betterment of OCC. She regularly takes on extra tasks at the facility and is always willing to assist those who ask for help. She thrives at any job she takes on, and it is clear to those around her that she is deeply attached to a sense of purpose and exemplifies the NDCS mission and values.

Proactive efforts lead to proficiency award

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) selected Captain Juan Terrazas as the 2019 NSP Warden’s Proficiency Award recipient for the Operations Division in recognition of his supervision over multiple areas and taking on extra responsibilities. Terrazas took it upon himself to improve the travel order process. This project required the collaboration of teammates across the agency from the medical department, shift supervisors and the Central Office transport team. TSCI comes together to share messages of hope

While working through the challenges of keeping a pandemic at bay, Tecumseh State Correctional Institute (TSCI) Associate Warden Megan Cruickshank had a brainstorm. She was inspired by individuals in the community reaching out to those most affected by COVID-19, particularly people in long-term care facilities who were not able to have visits from their friends and families. Cruickshank knew the men housed at TSCI could relate, and had an idea on how they could provide each other some hope.

Women assist National Guard to distribute PPE

A group of women at the Community Corrections Center in Lincoln (CCC-L) have been working hard to help make sure medical facilities across Nebraska have sufficient PPE supplies. Five days a week the women spend eight hours a day assisting the Nebraska National Guard at the State Surplus warehouse load and unload boxes of PPE in the Nebraska summer heat. They are also helping load pallet jacks, package units and organize the warehouse.

“It’s hard work but it gets us out of the center and it’s good to know we are helping people,” said one of the workers.
