Road to Reentry: Education and VLS
Road to Reentry: Education and VLS
More than 90% of individuals incarcerated in Nebraska will return to our communities. During #SecondChanceMonth we’re highlighting the rehabilitative services and resources that encourage successful reentry.
At admission, individuals complete education testing, and those who did not finish high school before incarceration may participate in a variety of programs to earn a high school diploma. Beyond high school, there are many education opportunities available. These include life skills and parenting programs, pre-vocational and vocational classes, English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, correspondence courses and university curriculum for college credit.
NDCS also partners with community organizations to implement Vocational and Life Skills (VLS), a program that provides men and women with employment and educational opportunities, skills training, job seeking, housing and other key resources. Since 2015, more than 9,400 individuals have participated in the VLS program!
Stay tuned this week as we look at each step of the road to reentry! #NDCSRoadToReentry
