May 2-8, 2021 is National Correctional Officers and Team Members Week. This week, we are celebrating the work performed by all NDCS team members. National Correctional Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6-12, 2021.

Corrections is not just a job, it is a calling and a commitment. Frontline workers are to be recognized for the work they have performed over the last year and a half to keep people safe and healthy throughout COVID-19. Watch the message from Dir. Scott R. Frakes.

Jeremy Elder is a good egg. But it wasn’t in the spirit of Easter that he dyed his hair orange. Instead, it was to support the Annual State Campaign Against Hunger. Elder, who oversees Cornhusker State Industries (CSI) set a goal for his teammates to collect $750 and 40 nonperishable food items. Needless to say, his team crushed it – donating in excess of $900. Now Deputy Elder is rocking his new orange hairstyle. Donated food items will help fill backpacks for the backpack program with the Food Bank of Lincoln. Thanks to all NDCS team members who gave!Read more

What if more than 40 community organizations could come together and share their resources for helping people live safe and productive lives after incarceration? This month, it happened! NDCS hosted a virtual reentry fair April 15 that included a day of 10-minute presentations from organizations that are involved in providing services to assist individuals who are reentering the community.

These organizations provide services to the community in education, mental health, vocational training and much more. Learning more about community resources, forming partnerships and brainstorming ways we can work together to make a...Read more

Our reentry team walks alongside incarcerated individuals in the release and reentry process. Throughout incarceration, our highly skilled reentry team encourages participation in programming and treatment that will help individuals to lead safe and productive lives in their communities. As individuals near release, the reentry team provides resources and comprehensive...Read more

Being prepared to work upon release is an important component to successful reentry and how we keep people safe. NDCS offers a variety of vocational and life skills training programs to increase employability and reduce recidivism.

In 2014, the Nebraska Legislature passed LB 907, which allocated funds for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services to partner with community agencies to provide vocational and life skills training to people while incarcerated, on parole or under probation supervision and for up to 18 months after discharge.

"Many of the grant funded programs have individuals with lived...Read more

Individuals face a number of challenges upon release, including securing a place to live, consistent health care services, a support system, shared culture, friends, structure and regular meals. The first days, weeks and months following release can be a time of significant vulnerability and risk for returning citizens.

Reentry helps individuals develop and follow a comprehensive and predictable action plan that covers immediate needs as well as a pathway to achieve long-term goals. Having a plan is crucial to reducing the risks that could result in a return to incarceration. #SecondChanceMonth #InstillingHopeRead more
