Teammates in NDCS strive to bring their best to their jobs – everyday. Jaime Graham, Dylan Rasmussen and Rebecca Edwards were among those recognized for outstanding contributions to the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) during 2020.

Graham has been with the agency since 2019. As a licensed practical nurse, she’s known for being an excellent team player, one who has a calm and patient manner and is an excellent communicator with members of the inmate population. Graham was awarded with the Warden’s Proficiency Performance Award.

There’s nothing like running out of something, just when you need it. During COVID-19, there was a lot of that going around (remember the toilet paper shortage?). Fortunately, NDCS could rely on its purchasing team to ensure that critical supplies were on hand.

Enjoying your job leads you to want to come into work each day. At the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L), that is Unit Manager (UM) Jonathan Watt’s main goal. Watt uses his humble and humorous leadership style to encourage, motivate and remind his teammates that things can be accomplished at work while having fun. As an example, he made his rounds at CCC-L, reminding teammates to take the Q12 Employee Engagement Survey, all while rocking a cat shirt and tie-dye pants. Graduation day took on a special meaning, with the completion of the most recent dog training class at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. Included in the canine/trainer teams was Hero and Robert Dunkin.

Hero was one of four dogs in the Second Chance Pups program. He was trained in preparation to be placed with the family of fallen Lincoln Police officer Mario Herrera.

Second Chance Pups is a program where otherwise overlooked dogs from local shelters are carefully matched with a volunteer inmate program participants, who train the dogs in basic obedience while providing human socialization and interaction with...Read more

Robert Owusu was selected as the 2020 Employee of the Year for the Operations Division at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). He assumed the position of Sergeant (Sgt.) at NSP in November of 2019. Sgt. Owusu is also a member of the Staff Empowerment & Resiliency/Victim Education & Support (SERVES) team. He is known for demonstrating exceptional leadership skills, always being professional and having an amazing work ethic. Here’s a tip you might not know… It’s better to pour chocolate chips into the batter, rather than sprinkling them on top when making pancakes.

That’s just one of many techniques women at the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L) learned during a cooking class taught by 35-year food industry veteran, Food Service Specialist Edward Bowman.

Nursing is the largest health care profession in Nebraska. The nurses who work in a correctional setting face unique challenges but are committed to providing the highest level of care to the incarcerated population daily. The NDCS nurses did an excellent job working hard through the pandemic to ensure that facilities were staying healthy.

With that being said, we celebrate National Nurses Appreciation Week with a proclamation from Gov. Ricketts. Thank you, NDCS nurses for keeping people safe.
