In the latest class to graduate the Staff Training Academy (STA), three of the graduates are the first to complete STA as a part of the Corrections Workforce Development Pathways partnership between NDCS and Peru State College. This program provides $15,000 in tuition and a stipend annually to students who choose a career in criminal justice. While completing classwork in pursuit of a degree, students work as interns at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI).

Food Service Specialist Martin Puchalla was selected as a recipient of the 2020 Proficiency Award for the Administrative Services Division at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Beginning his career in 2009, Puchalla has always shown a strong work ethic. During 2020, he stepped up and worked multiple shifts, ensuring that high quality meals left the kitchen and met the needs of the incarcerated population. Members of the NDCS Honor Guard were recently in Columbus, Ohio, for the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF) Annual National Memorial Ceremony where they honored the families of fallen correctional staff for 2020. They also presented a $5,000 check to the CPOF for a lifetime membership for the Tecumseh State Correctional Institute. These funds will be used for the Catastrophic Assistance Program, which provides financial support to correctional staff and their families due to catastrophic illness, injury or severe financial hardship.Read more

Facility Maintenance Specialist Electrician Michael Thomsen was selected as a recipient of the 2020 Warden’s Proficiency Award for the Administrative Services Division at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Beginning his career in June 1981 at NSP, Thomsen efficiently performs skilled electrical work, plumbing, welding, on-call duties and any other work that needs to be completed while demonstrating exceptional troubleshooting skills and a strong work ethic that his teammates look up to and respect.
