About 60 incarcerated men gathered in honor of service, sacrifice and camaraderie during the Veterans Club Annual Banquet at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) on Nov. 6.

Members of the NSP Veterans Club, which meets twice a month, attended the banquet alongside NSP Warden Robert Madsen, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Director Scott R. Frakes, state Chief Human Resources Officer Jason Jackson, state senators, executives from the Veterans Affairs office and many others.

Twenty-seven incarcerated men graduated from Defy Ventures’ “CEO of Your New Life” program at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) on Nov. 2. The program connects the incarcerated men, known throughout the course as Entrepreneurs in Trainings (EITs) with local business leaders and community volunteers who help them develop resumes and pitch business ideas. Twenty-eight volunteers attended the graduation, some travelling from as far as Wisconsin, New Jersey and California. Six incarcerated youths at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) graduated from ReConnect Inc.'s Final Number class on Oct. 20. This two-week course helps teach incarcerated individuals about leading their sentences productively, hopefully making this their "final number." Congratulations graduates!Read more

Incarcerated men at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) celebrated The Native American Spiritual and Cultural Awareness (NASCA) self-betterment group on Sept. 25. Festivities included a native meal, singing, drumming and storytelling.Read more

Nineteen mid-managers graduated from the 40-hour Leadership Academy on Oct. 27. This training provides participants the opportunity to learn from and interact with agency leaders in a meaningful way through coaching sessions, role plays, guest lectures and a leadership panel. One of the main tasks throughout the week involved developing action plans to take back to each institution. Class instructor Crystal Prochnow said each participant's action plan was full of passion and drive. "I always feel like I'm learning more than teaching," Prochnow said. The Community Justice Center completed its 81st Restorative Justice – Victims Impact/Empathy (Life Skills) class for restrictive housing at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women on Oct. 18. One-hundred percent of participants rated the class as excellent. "I learned about how I hurt others in my community," one participant said.Read more

Incarcerated youth at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) held a talent show on Oct. 17. The show was centered around The Pen Project, a quarterly art magazine that gives voices to the incarcerated. Not only did the talent show feature poems, stories, art and musical talent from the NCYF population, but also from volunteers in the community.Read more
