CJC completes 57th class at LCC

The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 57th Restorative Justice “Victims Impact/Empathy/Life Skills Class” at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) on Feb. 8. Eighty percent of class participants said they gained insight into who their victims really are and how their decisions impacted their victims and communities. "It gave insight on how many people I harmed," one participant said. "Where I thought it was one – I realized it was many more."Read more

CCC-L sergeant comes to corporal's aid during heart attack

Corporal Jeffrey Walraven suffered a heart attack while on duty at the Community Corrections Center-Lincoln (CCC-L) on Jan. 1. Sergeant Keisha Silas directed team members to activate Emergency Medial Services (EMS) while she stayed by Walraven's side. Walraven recently presented Silas with a challenge coin to show his appreciation for her brave actions. The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) thanks Silas and all team members who assisted Walraven during this time.Read more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Corporal Michelle Kowalski assists with inmate tablets at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). Kowalski has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2007. Chick-fil-A supports NCYF EAC with fundraiser

On Thursday, March 1, the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility's (NCYF) Employee Activity Committee (EAC) and Chick-fil-A in Bellevue, Neb. partnered to raised funds for NCYF employee activities and events. Chick-fil-A donated 10 percent of all sales from 6 to 8 p.m., while NCYF team members cleared off tables and held doors open for customers. Within the two hours, the NCYF EAC raised $399.14, which will be geared towards providing events and recognition for team members during Corrections Appreciation Month in May. NCYF team members want to thank the Chick-fil-A in Bellevue for their continued support.Read more

NDCS Team Member Spotlight: Donald Hardy

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Tool Control Corporal Donald Hardy takes inventory of tools the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI). Hardy has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2001. His main job duties include storing, replacing and taking inventory for approximately 12,000 tools within the facility. “I’ve worked in some kind of construction my whole life,” Hardy said. “I’ve always worked with tools and I really enjoy the people I work with. NDCS Honor Guard Team members travel to Pennsylvania to honor fallen sargent

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Honor Guard Team members Jill Ourada and Shar Most traveled to Pennsylvania this week to pay respect to Sergeant Mark Baserman of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, who lost his life in the line of duty on Feb. 26. Ourada and Most are pictured here with Honor Guard Team members from South Dakota and Michigan. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Administrative Assistant and Public Information Officer Lori Keller responds to emails at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW). Keller has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since May 2017. Her main job duties include organizing facility programming, scheduling teammates, facilitating Vocational and Life Skills (VLS) grantee classes and coordinating public information and media visits. “I like it because it’s an opportunity to help people,” Keller said. “I do a lot of things, but the programming is a way to help the ladies not reoffend. Fire in McCook comes close to WEC

March 9, 2018

The northwest section of McCook, Neb. was evacuated due to a quickly moving grass fire on March 6. The Work Ethic Camp (WEC) was in the direct path of the fire, which originated about a quarter of a mile directly north of the facility. While close, the fire did not impact the facility. WEC team members and incarcerated individuals were not in danger. “Thankfully we did not have to evacuate,” WEC Warden Pam Morello said. “It was closer than any of us would have liked.
