IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Nursing Supervisor Ryan LaFave enters patient information into the medical system at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). LaFave has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2016. His job duties include setting schedules for patients, nurses and dental personal and ensuring everything in the clinic and health services runs smoothly. “Most of these guys don’t receive regular healthcare or maybe can’t afford medication,” LaFave said. “You see a change in people once they start receiving regular healthcare.” #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlight

The Work Ethic Camp (WEC) closed out its month long staff appreciation activities for the month of May with its very first "Pie in The Face" throw. The WEC Leadership Team volunteered to participate and WEC staff voted for the top three. The voting ended up in a tie, so four ended up being selected to be the recipients of the pie throw. Thank you to the staff who spent many hours in planning and carrying out the month long activities which included, root beer floats pulled pork luncheons, dinners of their choosing provided to each shift, notebooks, stress balls, and many more. On May 31, award winning musician Linda McRae and her poet husband, James Whitmire, conducted two Express Yourself Writing Workshops at Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Linda is a platinum recording artist who plays guitar, banjo and accordion and was inducted to the 2016 British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame. Their workshops have been conducted from inside Folsom Prison to the Geneva Youth Rehabilitation Center. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Corporal Yuriy Kotsan unlocks a door at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF). Kotsan has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2017. His main duties include escorting incarcerated individuals, monitoring yard time and resolving conflicts. “I’m a former teacher so I understand how to work with younger guys,” Kotsan said. “Every person is different. The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 85th Nebraska Correctional Center for Women – “Restorative Justice Victims Impact/Empathy/Life Skills Class May 23. Seventy five percent of class participants rated the class excellent and twenty five percent rated that class as good. Eighty percent of the those who participated showed some level of empathy and/or insight in the effects their actions on their victims/community. On May 28, members of VFW Post #3606 and other veteran supporters rendered military honors with a twenty one gun salute in honor of veterans buried on Grasshopper Hill, which is located at Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Sixteen buried veterans have been identified in the cemetery including William Antony Fitzgerald who was a USMC Sergeant wounded in the Pacific. He was sentenced to five years at NSP in 1955 for a $30.00 bad check. He was a former middle-weight boxer and body guard to Jean Harlow and was married to Hollywood starlet Gloria Dickson.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Reentry Specialist Anthony Britten leads a reentry orientation meeting at the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC). Britten has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2009. His job duties include holding meetings with the population at various points of incarceration, helping formulate parole or discharge plans, speaking with community providers about available services and helping team members understand that reentry is everyone’s job. “One of the main reasons I work in reentry is because I know that most of the individuals in our care are going to be released someday,”...Read more

Eighty nine percent of class participants rated the class Excellent! With eighty percent showing some level of empathy and/or insight in the effects their actions on their victims/community. Two class participants said: “I learned how to take care of my Emotional Hygiene and also how my victims really suffered". “I now know what Restorative Justice is and how I’ve impacted the lives of my victims, community and family.”Read more
