Men at NSP find positive connections through music theory group
The men at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) who have a passion for music get to advance their skills in these music theory groups. There are currently eight music theory groups at the facility, each playing their own choice of music including rock ‘n roll, country, hip hop, Latin, Native American drum group and a Christian choir.
Group leaders teach other individuals how to play the guitar and piano during their two-hour sessions as well.
“This gives individuals the opportunity to play new instruments, play music with other people who have similar interests and make new connections in a positive way," said Recreation Specialist Melanie Hall. "These groups also assist each other in increasing their knowledge of music.”
The instruments available are guitars, an electric drum set, keyboard and other percussion equipment, such as cow bells and a triangle.
