Congratulations to the 15 men were awarded certificates of completion for their participation and diligence to the Alpha program at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over 11 weeks.

“I believe we are here because we want to change,” said graduate and small group leader Shawn Hutchison. “It doesn’t stop here.”

Each week, men meet in small groups and look at a different question focusing on faith. The program is designed to create positive conversation and openness.

Learning new skills, communication and building relationships are important parts of work at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. The Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) held a Case Management Retreat for its unit teammates to focus on enhancing these skills.

The day-long event was spent learning at the Cornhusker State Industries Conference Room and also at Pioneers Park where the group conducted several team building exercises.

It was an inspiring and emotional day for a group of men living at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and Lincoln Correctional Center as they stood proud, watching their pups from non-profit group Domesti-PUPS graduate as trained service dogs. Each K-9 will now take their place beside a person who will need their assistance in a variety of ways. This video from Domesti-PUPS gives a glimpse into the trainers at NDCS and the future these dogs will make possible for their new people.

The Mental Health Association (MHA) of Nebraska recently held its 4th Annual Grill & Chill at its newest Honu Home of Lincoln. The Honu Home is a respite facility operated by the Mental Health Association (MHA) of Nebraska. It provides continual peer support to clients who qualify for placement at the home. These clients are men and women who used to live at NDCS facilities who may struggle with mental and behavioral health challenges.

The new, larger Honu Home is able to house and assist 20 people at a time. The event doubled as an open house and thank you to the community and volunteers who stepped up to donate...Read more
