NDCS Team Member Spotlight: RN Babelonia Meyers

NDCS Team Member Spotlight: RN Babelonia Meyers

Originally from the Philippines, Registered Nurse (RN) Babelonia Meyers applied to be a nurse at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) in 2010. She said she felt a state job offering good benefits, retirement and job stability sounded like a positive direction to take her career. Meyers found all of that working in corrections. In addition, she found friendship, a supportive team environment and continuous educational opportunities while working at a prison facility. “Everything I learned in corrections was surprising.”

Meyers spent four years dedicated to assisting men at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) on the night shift before switching over to the day shift. She noted her day begins early in the morning and is non-stop. She makes a point to volunteer to work extra shifts and participates in team support activities at OCC to encourage bonding and unity among team members. “I enjoy working with OCC staff. We have a great relationship with our custody staff and a wonderful medical team.”

After 10 years of service to the state of Nebraska, Meyers wants people to know she feels safer working in a prison than ever working in any medical clinic in the community. She also makes a point to treat all people with respect. “I treat each patient as a patient, not as an inmate.”
