March 20, 2018 (Tecumseh, Neb.) – Rueben Reyes (34), inmate #77306, died on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at the Johnson County Hospital. He was assigned to the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., staff members observed Reyes unresponsive in his cell from an apparent suicide attempt. They immediately began CPR; Reyes was transferred to the local hospital via emergency responders, where he was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m.
Reyes was serving a sentence of 20 to 25 years for charges in Lancaster County. He was convicted of first degree assault and use of a firearm to commit a felony. His sentence began 01/31/2013. His parole eligibility date was 01/16/2025 and his tentative release date was 08/17/2027.
The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the death. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
