Nov 9, 2017 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Veterans’ Day is a time to remember all those who serve our country – both today and in the past. With the approach of the holiday on Nov. 11, we take the opportunity to express our appreciation for their commitment to our nation.

Corrections work fulfills a public service and many people who are drawn to this type of work have also served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Fifty-three Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) team members have used military leave in calendar year 2017, but these individuals represent just a percentage of NDCS’ veteran and military reserve population.

In late September, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented NDCS Director Scott R. Frakes with the Patriot Award – an award given to supervisors who provide exemplary support for team members who have served in the military. Director Frakes accepted the award on behalf of all NDCS supervisors noting, “it is our great honor to work alongside such committed individuals.”

According to ESGR’s website, “The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absences if needed.”

“Many NDCS team members have devoted a significant part of their lives to military service,” Director Frakes said. “Others continue their commitment in the military reserves while simultaneously attending to our department’s needs. They serve our country, and they share their skills, knowledge and abilities while serving NDCS. Our freedom comes from their sacrifice.”
